The Doylestown Fire Co. #1
held their annual banquet for members and Auxiliary
at the Gardenville Hotel on April 4. The annual
event honors the membership of the organizations and
gives the company the opportunity to recognize
members for their service to the community and fire
company for the previous year.
This years banquet saw two
significant firsts for the fire company- the first
female life member and the first woman voted
firefighter of the year.
The firefighter of the year for 2009, as voted for
by the membership of the fire company, is Lori
Westover. Westover, a Doylestown Township resident
and a member of the fire company since 1995, becomes
the first woman selected Firefighter of the Year by
the members of the fire company. She has served as a
trustee and engineer, and many committees, including
investigation, gear and safety. Lori is a scientist
at Johnson and Johnson, and she and her husband Lynn
have 2 children.
In addition to becoming the first female life member
of the company, Roseanne Annie Baughman had the
honor of being inducted with her husband, Boyd Bud
Baughman. The couple joined the fire company
together in 1989, and have both served in many roles
in the fire company. Annie is presently the
recording secretary of the fire company, and has
served as Safety Officer and with the fire
prevention unit. Bud, known to legions of Doylestown
children as Fireman Bud, led the fire companys fire
prevention unit for many years, and still delights
students and teachers from pre-school on up with his
passion for teaching fire safety. Bud has also
served as a Lieutenant and Captain of the fire
company.
Matt Grogan was awarded the Chiefs Award and Ed Loux the Presidents Award. Nate Coia, a junior
member, was awarded rookie of the year. Tom Goad, a
Delaware Valley College student, was the Associate
Member of the Year.
Service pins were handed
out, representing the time dedicated to the fire
company. John Happ was awarded a 60-year pin, Don
Smith and Curt Thompson, 55-year pins, Ron Bellerby,
50 years, Dutch Reeser, 45 years, Rob Hellyer, 40
years. 30 year pins were awarded to Doug Tilley,
Dave MacFarlane, Brian Cathers and Tom Cramer. 25
year pins to Dennis Loux, Jr. and Curt Rauss. 10
year pins to Larry Browne and Michele Haddon and 5
year pins to Matt Grogan and Michelle Jones.
Attendance awards are given to firefighters each
year who have the top 6 percentages of responding to
calls. The fire company responded to a record 701
calls, held 75 training sessions and 52 non-incident
activities and details for a total of 828 events.
Among firefighters, Steve Walther was 5th at 36%,
Michael Wood 4th at 39%, Robert Kohler 3rd at 42%,
James F. Shepard 2nd at 60%, and Bill McCool was the
top firefighter responder at 62%. Among fire police,
George Erb responded 49% and Captain of the fire
police Dennis Loux, Sr. was also the top overall
responder at 73%. These numbers represent a huge
amount of time given in service to the community and
are only a small representation of the time given by
members of the fire company.
