On September 9, 2009, Our 1989 Pierce Lance 105' Ladder was sold to the Indian River Volunteer Fire Company in Southern Delaware. Both companies met at Station 79 and transferred all the paperwork and ownership to the new company. Ladder 79 served Doylestown for 20 years and saw its fair share of fire. The truck will go down to Delaware and be refurbished with fresh paint and put in service as a 2nd out truck. We were sad to see the truck go but wish Indian River continued success with the truck. The Doylestown Fire Company's Fire Prevention Unit made it's annual visit to the Doylestown Branch of the Bucks County Free Library on Saturday, Sept. 19, as the guest readers for children's story time. The weekly event is a program at the library for toddlers and pre-K children. This is the 6th year the fire company has read as part of the program. This year the reading was attended by over 30 kids, their parents, and Doyle, the fire company's Dalmatian mascot. Fire Prevention Officer Larry Browne, his daughter Megan, 8, and associate member Paul Cain read children's books on firefighters and firefighting to the kids. Doyle and Lieutenant Todd Kulp, firefighters Chris Morris and Jenna Fetterolf, junior firefighter Brett Fetterolf and explorer Chris Hagstrom were there to lend a hand with tours of Doylestown's Engine 19-1 in the parking lot on the beautiful Saturday morning.
The event is also a kickoff of the companies fire prevention week activities, which falls this year the week of October 4. Doylestown will be holding it's annual fire prevention open house on October 2, from 6:30-9 PM, at the Shewell Ave. firehouse, in conjunction with First Friday Doylestown. There will be fire trucks, Doyle the Dalmatian, fire safety education, and lots of fun for all. The Teddy Bear Clinic from Doylestown Hospital's Emergency Division will be there to tend to the medical needs of favorite stuffed friends, and the grand prize winners of the annual fire prevention poster contest from Doyle, Kutz, Linden and Our Lady of Mt. Carmel Elementary Schools. The event is free.  Photos by Larry Browne

The annual Fire Prevention Open House was held on October 2, 2009 at the Shewell Ave. firehouse. Even with the threat of rain, over 600 kids and adults attended the event, held in conjunction with First Friday Doylestown. Kids had an opportunity to try on real firefighter gear, extinguish a "house fire" with a real fire hose, and tour fire trucks. The centerpiece of the night was the fire company's new ladder truck, Ladder 79, as the crowd was given a demonstration of the new truck's capabilities. The Teddy Bear Clinic from Doylestown Hospital's Emergency division was there to take care of the need of kids and their favorite stuffed friends, the Red Cross brought their Emergency Response Vehicle, and Central Bucks Ambulance showed the onlookers an ambulance. The fire prevention poster contest winners were on display, and Doyle the Dalmatian was there to get and give hugs to the kids, both big and small. Photos by Larry Browne MORE
The Bucks County Chiefs and Firefighters Association, with the County of Bucks, held a memorial service at the public safety memorial at the Bucks County Courthouse on October 4, 2009 to remember Bucks County firefighters and fire police officers who made the ultimate sacrifice. The ceremony, attended by firefighters from all over Bucks County and the families of the fallen, is held each October in conjunction with the National Fallen Firefighters Memorial ceremony in Emmitsburg, MD, where firefighters who perished in the line of duty are remembered each year. Bucks County Commissioners Charles Martin and Diane Ellis Marseglia, along with State Representative Marguerite Quinn, were among the dignitaries who addressed the assembled audience. The names of all Pennsylvania firefighters who died in 2008, and all of the Bucks County firefighters and fire police officers were read, and a bell sounded for each. The ceremony closed with everyone in attendance laying a flower at the memorial.  Photos by Larry Browne MORE
Crews from both stations took advantage of some donated properties on Sunday, October 18. Three buildings behind the Cross Keys Diner on Route 313 were given to the fire company to hold drills in before they are torn down at the end of this month. While many members of the company were away at a wedding (Congrats Ryan!) some stayed behind to run calls. Since there was nothing better to do, we went up to the buildings to practice some of our skills. Ladder 79 and Engine 19-1 were on scene and members were able to practice venting roofs, forcible entry, outside vent work, and go over some building construction. Here are a few photos from that day. Photos by Mike Suessenguth. MORE
