The first call of the year for
the Doylestown Fire Company came in around 11am on
January 2nd, 2009. Bucks County Radio dispatched a
dwelling fire on Evergreen Drive in New Britain
Borough off of Route 202 with one injured in
the backyard. Capt 19 Bret Morris arrived first and
established Doylestown Command reporting he had a
1.5 story dwelling with heavy smoke showing. Morris
reported an oil burner service tech down in the
backyard. Engine 19 layed in from the hydrant and
stretched hand lines to the rear of the dwelling to
attack the fire in the basement. Ladder 79 went to
the roof to open up and vented windows from the
exterior. Engine 79 took a position at the hydrant
to boost pressure if needed. Initial attack of the
basement fire was slowed due to utilities that were
not yet secured. Three firefighters in the basement
were shocked by the electrical service and were
taken to Doylestown Hospital for observations before
being released. The fire was placed under control
after an hour. Firefighters checked for extension
and found some hot spots on the first and second
floor where fire traveled up the walls of the
dwelling. County Fire officials were investigating
the cause of the accident and the injured service
tech was taken to Abington Hospital with 2nd degree
burns. Doylestown was assisted by Warrington,
Plumstead, Hilltown, Chalfont, Lingohocken, Warwick
and Midway Fire Companies. Photos provided by Sara
Grogan, Denny Loux Sr, and Lindsay Hendricks.
